FCMR funds research in India
FCMR is working to save mother’s and their babies lives from the toxemia of pregnancy, a dreaded complication jeopardizing the lives of both the mother and baby. This complication begins with an increase in blood pressure, edema, kidney insufficiency, and loss of valuable proteins in the blood through the kidneys. The cause of this complication was until now, unknown but the excellent work of Dr. John Irwin has opened the door and it's cause indeed appears linked to a Thiamin deficiency in the pregnant mothers.
The study supported by FCMR will investigate the supplementation of 2,000 pregnant women at Mahatma Ghandi University in India, to evaluate the effectiveness of Thiamin in these mothers, to determine the life saving support in the outcome of these women and their babies.
We are very excited to be conducting such a valuable study to save millions of lives around the world with this simple intervention of a single nutrient. Just as folic acid was proven to prevent spinal bifida in fetuses, we are hoping to be able to shed more light on the life saving properties of specific nutrients in pregnancy and save the lives of mothers and their babies.
