PARKINSON’S DISEASE

The neurotoxicity in Parkinson’s disease continues even after treatments. The toxicity is caused by many factors which may be influenced by both diet and nutritional supplements. The following list is to assist those patients who wish to support their condition with additional protective nutrients. These are not a substitute for improved diet and medical therapies, but rather an adjuvant to them.

NUTRIENT SUPPLEMENTS:

Boswellia Serrata 3 x 400 mg

Co enzyme Q 10: 500-2000 mg/day

Gingko biloba: 3 x 20-40 mg/day

Alpha lipoic acid: 600 mg/day

N-acetylcysteine: 3 x 200-500 mg/day

Devils claw: 3 x 1 capsules/day

Nicotinamide: 3 x 250-500 mg/day

Mixed tocopherols(Vit E natural): 600 I.U./day

Cod liver oil 500 mg/day

Wild salmon oil: 2 grams/day

S-adenosylmethionine: (SAM) 3 x 100-200/day

Vitamin C: (natural with rose hips)1 gram/day

Selenium: 200 mcg/day (Take separate from Vitamin C)

Flavinoids(mixed): 100 mg/day

Vitamin B 12: 100 mcg/day

There are many other substances that are helpful but the above are the most inhibitory for nuerotoxicity. Additional supplements may include Cod liver oil 500 mg/day( vit D is often low in PD patients), Vitamin B 1(thiamine), B 5 (pantothenic acid) B7 (biotin),B 9 (folate), acetyl carnitine, creatine, phosphatidylcholine. Warning: All patients with high blood pressure or any bleeding/clotting disorders must consult their physician when taking supplements.

DIET (ORGANIC): Diet that support healthy brain tissue and regeneration is predominantly more vegetables (broccoli, cabbage, sweet potatoes, beets onions, peppers), salads (avacodos, tomatoes, spinach), seeds and nuts (walnuts, almonds, etc.), whole grains legumes and beans, berries( particularly cherries and blueberries, grapes), and more fish and less animal fats. Green tea, and herbal teas. Dark chocolate (Hurray!).

THERAPIES: Physical therapy is imperative in the redevelopment and protection of the brain. Depending on the capabilities of the patient, exercise with the therapist trained in PD therapeutic measures include walking therapy, bicycle(stationery in many cases), swimming or water physiotherapy, stretching, pilates, resistance training, and Eastern movement therapies such as Qi gong etc.

Mental training, crossword puzzles, courses in hobbies, or other areas, music therapy and very important Speech therapy (Lee Silverman therapy) are all necessary and supportive.

Moving Toward Cracking the Cancer Code:

Causes & Prevention

An Interview with Dana F. Flavin.

Dana F. Flavin, MD, President and Founder of the Foundation for Collaborative Medicine and Research, recently spoke with APCaP about causes of cancer and prostate cancer prevention.

APCaP: What causes cancer?

Dr. Flavin: Genetics, the environment, diet, electromagnetic fields, lifestyle, and high stress levels are all causes of cancer. However, each person has the potential to regulate many of these areas. The development of a cancerous environment, and the process of tumor growth, occurs over time. The disease develops in most people from multifaceted activity that goes through years of change ultimately affecting the body’s balance.

APCaP: What are some initial steps men can take to prevent prostate cancer?

Dr. Flavin: Unfortunately, a lot of people don’t think about prevention if the disease hasn’t affected them. However, everyone should be aware of the possibility of cancer and take better care of their body, mind, and environment. The conversation about cancer prevention begins with asking people if they are able to relax, take time for themselves, stop everything, and have faith in themselves. From there, diet and nutrition should be evaluated, as well as frequency and types of exercise. From these basic but critically important forms of self-care, there can be a shift in the body’s response to carcinogens and pathogens. As a physician, my first form of assessment involves looking at the patient, including their skin, presentation, and behavior, as well as getting to know their habits and lifestyle. That tells me a lot about their state of health.

APCaP: What are other ways men can monitor their health and take preventive measures against prostate cancer?

Dr. Flavin: Men, and women, can monitor their state of health, including their immune function, by noticing how often they pick up viruses, infections, colds, coughs, flus, rashes, herpes, and intestinal problems. A healthy immune system should be able to prevent most of those ailments. In addition, research shows that bacteria, fungi, viruses, infections, and parasites can support the growth of cancer. Even though science demonstrates this association, most people with cancer and those concerned about cancer prevention are not being tested for these conditions and prescribed effective therapies. Also, regular blood work is useful to provide a general overview of what is going on in the body, but the results don’t always reflect disease. In addition, people should be tested for heavy metal toxicity and treated with detoxification protocols through diet modifications and supplements as a preventive measure.

APCaP: Would you elaborate on dietary and nutritional recommendations related to prostate cancer prevention?

Dr. Flavin: A person’s diet is critical because the foods we eat create the internal chemistry of the body. Our internal environment can support the growth of or fight against disease. The ph of our body is regulated by diet. The ph is an important measurement referring to the level of acidity or alkalinity of a substance. Many cancer patients have a more acidic environment, which is conducive to an environment favoring bacteria, fungi, and viruses around tumors releasing cancer promoting growth factors. The predominant American diet of meat, white flour and sugar, refined carbohydrates, and few vegetables increases acidity and inflammation in the body. Instead, I recommend an alkaline diet with a high amount of vegetables, fruits, seeds, and lentils. A prostate cancer prevention diet should also include tomatoes or tomato sauce, garlic, shitake and maitake mushrooms, fiber, fish, pumpkin seeds, and green tea. Also, eating organic foods is better in the long run. Non-organic foods contain many different pesticides that have a cumulative effect in the body causing neurological damage and other harmful conditions.

APCaP: You’ve emphasized the importance of a healthy, balanced body and mind in relation to the prevention of prostate and other types of cancer. What else can men, and women, do in their home environments to prevent cancer?

Dr. Flavin: Cancer prevention should be addressed on so many levels. For one, the closeness and support of the family unit plays a bigger role than we realize. Supportive relationships impact our health. Families should be aware of other forms of potential toxicity in their home environment and only use household products for cleaning and hygiene without chemicals. Also, electromagnetic fields from televisions, computers, and other electronics should not be located close to beds and overall exposure should be limited.

APCaP: What about the environment outside of our homes?

Dr. Flavin: There are huge amounts of toxins contaminating our water, soil, and air. One example includes phthalates, a widely used industrial compound in plastics, perfumes, hairsprays, lubricants, wood finishers, and other materials. Phthalates have been associated with cancer, adult infertility, male reproductive development, and other devastating conditions. Unfortunately, today’s water supply contains an elevated level of phthalates that impacts our drinking water, not to mention fish and other animals in our lakes and streams. As a result, only mineral or filtered water should be consumed, and in glass, not plastic. Water with fluoride should not be used since fluoride competes with selenium, an important mineral associated with the prevention of prostate and other types of cancer. Again, cancer prevention involves many factors. Although we can decrease our risk and the chances of getting the disease earlier by taking every precaution possible, it isn’t total prevention. We are still fighting our environment.

APCaP: Thank you, Dr. Flavin, for sharing your thoughts about causes of cancer and the prevention of prostate cancer, as well as other forms of the disease.

Dr. Flavin has studied medicine and science internationally for the past 30 years. She developed expertise in chemistry, biochemistry, pharmacology, nutrient biochemistry and medicine through extensive training in the United States, Austria, and Germany. Dr. Flavin is the former top toxicologist at the Food and Drug Administration. She founded The Foundation for Collaborative Medicine and Research, which includes an international network of experts, to educate patients and other health care professionals about novel approaches to cancer and autoimmune diseases.

WE ALL HAVE CANCER

1. Every person has cancer cells in the body. These cancer cells do not show up in the standard tests until they have multiplied to a few billion. When doctors tell cancer patients that there are no more cancer cells in their bodies after treatment, it just means the tests are unable to detect the cancer cells because they have not reached the detectable size.

2. Cancer cells occur between 6 to more than 10 times in a person’s lifetime.

3. When the person’s immune system is strong the cancer cells will be destroyed and prevented from multiplying and forming tumors. To strengthen the Immune system it is necessary to detoxify the body from fungi caused from too many antibiotics in our medical therapies and in our foods), parasites, and heavy metals. Something as simple as cilanto and selenium, found in garlic, can help to eliminate heavy metals. Herbs such as gentian violet, dandelion root and pokeweed or wild oregano oil kill parasites and fungi.

4. When a person has cancer it indicates the person has multiple nutritional deficiencies. These could be due to genetic, environmental, food and lifestyle factors.

5. To overcome the multiple nutritional deficiencies, changing diet and including supplements will strengthen the immune system.

6. Chemotherapy involves poisoning the rapidly-growing cancer cells and also destroys rapidly-growing healthy cells in the bone marrow, gastro-intestinal tract etc, and can cause organ damage, like liver, kidneys, heart, lungs etc.

7. Radiation while destroying cancer cells also burns, scars and damages healthy cells, tissues and organs.

8. Initial treatment with chemotherapy and radiation will often reduce tumor size. However prolonged use of chemotherapy and radiation do not result in more tumor destruction.

9. When the body has too much toxic burden from chemotherapy and radiation the immune system is either compromised or destroyed, hence the person can succumb to various kinds of infections and complications.

10. Chemotherapy and radiation can cause cancer cells to mutate and become resistant and difficult to destroy. Surgery can also cause cancer cells to spread to other sites.

11. An effective way to battle cancer is to starve the cancer cells by not feeding it with the foods it needs to multiply.

CANCER CELLS FEED ON:

a. Sugar is a cancer-feeder. By cutting off sugar it cuts off one important food supply to the cancer cells. Sugar substitutes like NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, etc are made with Aspartame and it is harmful. A better natural substitute would be Manuka honey or molasses but only in very small amounts. Table salt has a chemical added to make it white in colour. Better alternative is Bragg’s aminos or sea salt, or Himalayan salt.

b. Milk causes the body to produce mucus, especially in the gastro-intestinal tract. Cancer feeds on mucus. By cutting off milk and substituting with unsweetened rice milk cancer cells are being starved.

c. Cancer cells thrive in an acid environment. A meat-based diet is acidic and it is best to eat fish, and a little chicken rather than beef or pork. Meat also contains livestock antibiotics, growth hormones and parasites, which are all harmful, especially to people with cancer.

d. A diet made of 80% fresh vegetables and juice, whole grains, seeds, nuts and a little fruits help put the body into an alkaline environment. About 20% can be from cooked food including beans. Fresh vegetable juices provide live enzymes that are easily absorbed and reach down to cellular levels within 15 minutes to nourish and enhance growth of healthy cells. To obtain live enzymes for building healthy cells try and drink fresh vegetable juice, including carrot juice (most vegetables including bean sprouts) and eat some raw vegetables 2 or 3 times a day. Enzymes are destroyed at temperatures of

104 degrees F (40 degrees C). e. Avoid coffee, tea, and chocolate, which have high caffeine. Green tea is a better alternative and has cancer-fighting properties. Water: best to drink purified water, or filtered, to avoid known toxins and heavy metals in tap water. Distilled water is acidic, avoid it.

12. Meat protein is difficult to digest and requires a lot of digestive enzymes. Undigested meat remaining in the intestines become putrefied and leads to more toxic buildup.

13. Cancer cell walls have a tough protein covering. By refraining from or eating less meat it frees more enzymes to attack the protein walls of cancer cells and allows the body’s killer cells to destroy the cancer cells.

14. Some supplements build up the immune system (IP6, Flor-ssence, Essiac, anti-oxidants, vitamins, minerals, EFAs etc.) to enable the body’s own killer cells to destroy cancer cells. Other supplements like vitamin E succinate are known to cause apoptosis, or programmed cell death, the body’s normal method of disposing of damaged, unwanted, or unneeded cells.

15. Cancer is a disease of the mind, body, and spirit. A proactive and positive spirit will help the cancer warrior be a survivor. Anger, unforgiveness and bitterness put the body into a stressful and acidic environment. Learn to have a loving and forgiving spirit. Learn to relax and enjoy life.

16. Cancer cells cannot thrive in an oxygenated environment. Exercising daily, and deep breathing help to get more oxygen down to the cellular level. Oxygen therapy is another means employed to destroy cancer cells.

CANCER UPDATE

This is supported by Johns Hopkins and Walter Reed Army Medical Center as well.

1. No plastic containers in micro.

2. No water bottles in freezer.

3. No plastic wrap in microwave.

Dioxin chemicals causes cancer, especially breast cancer. Dioxins are highly poisonous to the cells of our bodies.

Don’t freeze your plastic bottles with water in them as this releases dioxins from the plastic.

Recently, Dr. Edward Fujimoto, Wellness Program Manager at Castle Hospital , was on a TV program to explain this health hazard. He talked about dioxins and how bad they are for us.

He said that we should not be heating our food in the microwave using plastic containers. This especially applies to foods that contain fat. He said that the combination of fat, high heat, and plastics releases dioxin into the food and ultimately into the cells of the body.

Instead, he recommends using glass, such as Corning Ware, Pyrex or ceramic containers for heating food. You get the same results, only without the dioxin. So such things as TV dinners, instant ramen and soups, etc., should be removed from the container and heated in something else.

Paper isn’t bad but you don’t know what is in the paper. It’s just safer to use tempered glass, Corning Ware, etc.

He reminded us that a while ago some of the fast food restaurants moved away from the foam containers to paper. The dioxin problem is one of the reasons.

Also, he pointed out that plastic wrap, such as Saran, is just as dangerous when placed over foods to be cooked in the microwave. As the food is nuked, the high heat causes poisonous toxins to actually melt out of the plastic wrap and drip into the food. Cover food with a paper towel instead.

Cancer: Presently studies in Pancreas cancer therapy are being conducted in pilot studies to determine the efficacy of a new compound that is reversing the anaerobic metabolism in cancers. We have seen excellent results and remissions in Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, Medullary Thyroid Cancers and breast cancer patients with brain metastases. We are also testing new combination therapies and nutrient support for prostate cancer and pancreas patients internationally. Gastrointestinal tumors appeared responsive to these therapies and new work is being planned for lung cancer patients to coincide with one of the exciting new antibodies that activate the Immune system to fight the tumors. This latter antibody has shown itself successful in melanoma and is presently being investigated at multiple Universities for Kidney cancer and lung cancer.

This valuable research will help to reestablish brain development and organ development after damage from hypoxia, internal bleeding and accident caused damage. We are opening doors to the future today with this valuable work. A book is presently being written to address the many exciting areas in relation to this work. We are presently working on more data that will be released in a book on the application and activation of stem cells to reverse aging and damage to repair all the organs of the body.

Autism: FCMR is collaborating with organizations and foundations to develop new directions in nutrient support to enhance learning capabilities in effected children of this dreaded complication. Early therapy can make a world of difference in the reversal of symptoms, expediting learning capabilities toward a normal development in these children. Recent reports indicate a change in the mitochondrial of these children leading to damage at the very center of the cells energy metabolism. We are presently reviewing successful diet and nutrient interventions to develop the most effective nutrient combination for enhancing the reversal of autism and allowing these children a healthy return to normal life.
